Berlin, June 17.02.2023, 9, 15:XNUMX a.m – Citizens of the last generation before the tipping points are gathering today for a peaceful protest near the Humboldt University on the street Unter den Linden to interrupt the deadly business as usual. They receive support from 34 scientists who stand behind the committed people on the street. Among others, the scientific director of the Center for Technology and Society at the TU Berlin, Prof. Dr. Dr. Martina Schäfer and head of the International Office at the Charité, Univ.- Prof. Dr. Friedemann Paul. Together they make it clear: the protest is more than appropriate given the current planetary and political situation. Ignoring scientific facts and neglecting the obligations enshrined in the Basic Law by the government must no longer be tolerated.

It's on the road Prof. Dr. Julia Bee. For years she has been watching in disbelief the government's actions, which are far from scientific and endangering our survival. She explains: “I am a university lecturer and not only respect the democratic process, but also see it as my job to convey this to young people in courses. I am appalled that peaceful protests are seen as a problem instead of taking scientific studies more seriously. These have been showing the dramatic and interlinked consequences of the climate for decades “The dramatic and interlinked consequences of the climate, biodiversity and waste catastrophe have been ongoing for decades, and that civil resistance against them is appropriate.”

Auch Barbara Schramkowski, a professor at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University, who helped organize the action, supports the protest today and explains: “We show solidarity with the concerns and forms of protest of the last generation and condemn the criminalization of the movement. The people and parties who stick to the status quo in politics and business should be charged.”

Scientists have been warning about the dramatic consequences of global warming for decades. The first world climate conference took place in 1979 to address the danger and develop solutions. Since then, laws have been adapted, rewritten and international treaties concluded. But there was no redirection. Emission reductions lag behind international and national laws. CO2 emissions increased in 2022 to an all-time high. Warnings from science and research are becoming more concrete and urgent, but they are still not sufficiently incorporated into political decisions.

Three days ago, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke to the UN Security Council of an impending “Mass exodus” and “increasingly fierce battles for drinking water, living space and other resources”.

The consequences of decades of inaction are already catastrophic. This week alone was... New Zealand and South Africa A national emergency has been declared due to extreme weather events

Irma Trommer sits on the street in Berlin today determined and hopeful. She emphasizes: “If the government continues to bend to the will of the fossil fuel lobby and ignore scientific facts, we will create irreversible tipping points and irreversibly destroy any chance of salvation. We cannot undo suffering, but we can still avert climate hell. Let us come together in a social council and work on this together.”
