Berlin, 10.01.23/07/30, XNUMX:XNUMX – In Berlin, supporters of the last generation are stopping car traffic today and thus the fossil-fueled everyday life that is driving us towards climate catastrophe. Once again they are carrying yellow crosses, showing their support for the protests against the demolition of the village of Lützeraths for the RWE open-cast coal mine.

Eika Jacob is a mother of four children. For them too, she is sitting on the street today: “We have arrived in the middle of the climate catastrophe. 2022 will go down in German history as the hottest year ever. The new year starts with temperatures sometimes over 20 degrees in January – what kind of future are we releasing our children into? I will not stand by and watch the destruction continue!”

The small village of Lützerath is a symbol for the whole world. It is right on the edge of a coal mine. A dead lunar landscape in which coal excavators work every day to destroy our livelihoods. A coal company has decided that this destruction serves its interests.
The government is now helping him to feed society the lie that Lützerath must be destroyed because we absolutely need the coal underneath to secure our energy supply in the short term.

This lie is easy to see through. It would take at least three years before the coal would even be used under Lützerath, because the coal warehouses are full. Not a single study by independent institutes comes to the conclusion that we need coal in the short term.

Carla Rochel, spokesperson for the Last Generation, said: “With the dismantling of Lützerath, our basic rights are being sold off to RWE in an insidious way. The government is selling us the dirty deal under the guise of caring. This is hard to beat in terms of absurdity, since by choosing to support corporate interests and against protecting our livelihoods, they are massively violating their duty of care towards the population.”

She adds: “Herbert Reul still claims that we are a minority that is fighting back. In contrast to the federal government, which is failing miserably at this task, we represent the majority of the population. No one wants to give up their freedom and their life for the greed of corporations!”
