Berlin, June 6.1.2022, 07, 45:XNUMX a.m – Protesters hold yellow wooden crosses with one hand while the other hand is stuck to the road. Supporters of the last generation are currently blocking various motorway entrances in three locations in the south and west of Berlin. They carry yellow crosses and thus show support for the last generation of protests over coal mining in the village of Lützerath in North Rhine-Westphalia. The site is to be completely demolished in order to access the brown coal underneath.

The attack on Lützerath is deeply affecting. By demolishing the village, a home is being sacrificed for profit interests in two ways. If Lützerath is razed to the ground, an entire village will initially lose its home.
In addition, the 280 million tons of coal under Lützerath will further fuel the climate catastrophe and exceed any climate goals by far - thus destroying our homes. However, unlike the villagers, humanity as a whole has no way of escaping this destruction.

Judith Stier sits today on a motorway entrance in Berlin Tempelhof. She carries a yellow cross in front of her that is almost as big as she is: “The fact that entire villages are being excavated is only in the interests of the coal bosses. Ultimately, the catastrophe will affect them too and they will realize that they cannot live on money alone. But then our home is already irretrievably lost. Instead of protecting people's homes in Germany, the government is doing the dirty work of RWE and Co - I cannot and will not accept that."

As the WDR quoted from a study by several research institutes in the summer of 2022 The coal under Lützerath is completely irrelevant for Germany's energy supply. Nevertheless, the federal government repeats RWE's refuted figures at every opportunity. The electricity company continues to claim that coal is urgently needed under Lützerath.

Carla Hinrichs, speaker of the Last Generation, can only shake her head: “Asking RWE how much coal we should burn is like asking a cigarette manufacturer how much we should smoke. Coal combustion is and remains the number one climate killer. Dredging away entire villages for even more coal, the burning of which will drag us even deeper into climate catastrophe - that is a human and ecological disaster. "

RWE is not only lying to the population and the government for its own profit, but is also deliberately endangering the future of all of us. Instead of taking action, the government is repeating the lies and complicit in the crime.

Supporters of the last generation will peacefully and resolutely defend the basic rights of the population alongside the local people. The right to live in freedom and prosperity – the right to a future. These fundamental rights are not for sale.
