Munich, Berlin, December 20.12.2022, 08, 50:XNUMX a.m – Supporters of the last generation are gathering again in downtown Munich today. Despite the general decree explicitly prohibiting this, they are resolutely continuing their peaceful resistance in the heart of the Bavarian capital. Although the police were already there to stop the peaceful protest, some of the protesters managed to stick themselves to the street.
The lettering “Last generation before the tipping points” and “Art. 20A GG = protect lives” their banners denounce the federal government's breach of the constitution through its lack of willingness to act in the climate emergency.
Several of the protesters who gathered today were only released from the Stadelheim prison last Saturday.
Among them is also Judith Beadle. The 42-year-old is a mother of two and has already been in preventive detention in Bavaria several times. She was held without trial for several weeks in both November and December. She consciously takes the risk of spending Christmas in a cell instead of with her loved ones.
“I love my children – and that’s exactly why I’m sitting on the street today”, describes Judith. “1,5 degrees are a thing of the past, we are racing towards a world far beyond this life-threatening limit. Our children are left without any guarantee of safety. We are currently depriving them of their last chance for a future worth living.”
It's still touching Brief, which she wrote during her second incarceration in the correctional facility: “I would like to write as usual with hope and confidence, but all I feel is fear. Fear that people will give in to repression again over the holidays, that it will continue like this next year, that the weeks and months will pass and we will suddenly reach the point where our last chance to save our future has passed.
What will it feel like to look back, in disbelief that we knew everything and chose to ignore it rather than act?”
In Berlin there are also blockades near Beusselstrasse in the Moabit district. On the motorway access to the A100, supporters of the last generation stuck themselves to the cold asphalt and caused severe traffic restrictions.
Aimee van Baalen, Speaker of the Last Generation: “The government’s timid efforts to achieve a little more climate protection are a complete debacle. Fossil companies continue to be supported by the government and political decisions are made in their favor. The tipping points are getting closer and closer – either we do everything we can to survive now or the climate catastrophe will overwhelm us.”
