Schönefeld, November 24.11.2022th, XNUMX, 16:20 – At the moment, supporters of the last generation are blocking the tarmac at Berlin Brandenburg Airport. While some of them are stuck to the asphalt, others are riding bicycles across the shunting area, bringing air traffic to a standstill. Shortly before entering the airport premises, they informed the police of their intentions via an emergency call.
Michael Hassemer, judge at the Rhineland-Palatinate Constitutional Court, considers the resistance of the last generation to be justified by the climate emergency: "In any case, the consequences that arise for humanity from failing to take climate protection measures are so serious that impairments of rights through protest are, to a certain extent, justified by a state of emergency and are therefore acceptable. "
Also the CDU politician German politican recently made a surprisingly benevolent and explicit statement about the Last Generation: "The young people are right. […] Without the pressure from young people, politics on climate protection would move much more slowly."
Aimee van Baalen, speaker of the Last Generation, replies: “The fact that this pressure is even necessary, that ordinary citizens have to sit in prison cells for weeks to get the government to protect people, is dismaying. "
Your peaceful resistance is directed at the federal government. This negligently puts us on a collision course with climate tipping points. At this moment, millions of lives are being sacrificed for the profit and luxury of a few through fossil subsidies, including for air travel.
The plane is not a means of transport for normal citizens. Most people - about 80 percent of the world's population - have never flown in their lives. A wealthy percent of the population alone causes around half of flight-related greenhouse gas emissions. The government supports air traffic with billions in subsidies every year. And that while we actually urgently need to switch from planes and cars to trains. In order to give everyone access to public transport, the last generation is calling for the continuation of the 9 euro ticket as a first security measure.
Lina Schinkothe is sitting on the tarmac today because she can no longer tolerate this injustice. She emphasizes: “In the end, we will all suffer from the climate catastrophe. However, it is precisely those who are least responsible for them who are hit first and hardest. A society cannot afford this level of ruthlessness!"
In Cologne and Berlin there are additional road blockades against the deadly fossil fuel business today. Once again there are portraits of the people who are imprisoned in Munich.
20 people of all ages are currently in prison in Munich because they peacefully took part in a Last Generation road blockade. Today, 70-year-old Abo, among others, is blocking the BER runway. It's about everything and about all of us. Looking away is no longer an option.
