Berlin 26.06. – Last week, the Last Generation disrupted everyday life in Berlin every day and looked for the Climate Chancellor. Now the movement is stopping its road blockades for a few days and is turning its attention to the G7 summit in Elmau to see whether Olaf Scholz will finally fulfill his international responsibility as “climate chancellor” of a G7 state and oppose new drilling in the North Sea and the continuation of the deadly fossil fuel course begins.
Carla Hinrichs, Press Secretary of Last Generation, says: “Where is Chancellor Scholz, who took office as climate chancellor? We expect him, as G7 President, to follow through on his announcement to make the G7 states global pioneers: especially when it comes to climate justice! We stand in solidarity with the demands of Debt for Climate for debt relief for the global south.”

Esteban Servat from Debt for Climate says: "Debt is the knee on the neck of the Global South, driving the advance of the fossil fuel industry, colonial exploitation and environmental destruction. In the midst of the climate crisis - and as the world rapidly heads toward a global debt crisis that will hit the Global South hardest - we are building a global movement that can answer both crises from the perspective of those most affected and transform debt into climate action."

The Global South has historically been responsible for only 8% of climate disasters, but suffers 82-92% of the costs and 98-99% of the associated deaths. The IPCC has stressed that "The current development challenges that lead to high vulnerability [to climate disasters] are influenced by historical and persistent patterns of injustice, such as colonialism, particularly for many Indigenous peoples and local communities."
During the G7 summit in Germany, over 40 actions by groups in 28 countries will take place over the three days of the summit. Although most of the actions are taking place in the Global South, there are also notable protests in the G7 countries.
The citizens of the last generation expect Olaf Scholz to finally live up to his responsibility and protect our survival. This responsibility is global, just as the crisis we are living in is global. Debt relief for climate justice will help preserve the planet and humanity.
