University occupation in Leipzig – students support demands of the last generation

Leipzig, May 11.05.2022, 21, XNUMX p.m – After a lecture by Henning Jeschke, co-founder of the Last Generation, (former) students occupy the Audimax at Leipzig University.

They demand from the Rector Prof. Dr. Eva Ines Obergfell a declaration of life. She should officially and publicly address the GREEN Minister Habeck and speak out against the construction and financing of NEW fossil fuel infrastructure. In particular, according to the students, there should be no new oil drilling in the North Sea.

With their action, the students show solidarity with the Last Generation and their current campaign: “Stop the fossil fuel madness“. They announce that they will occupy the university until the rector, Prof. Dr. Obergfell responds to the demands.

Lilly Schubert (23)

Lilly Schubert, 23, one of the occupiers of the Audimax at Leipzig University: “Fossil fuels are destroying our future. We hereby interrupt normal university life and peacefully occupy this public space. Because we all have to deal with scientific reality now and move from talking to taking action! The university must also live up to its responsibility and its social mission in the climate emergency."

Lina Schinkoethe (20)

Lina Schinköthe (20), a student at the university, adds: “We invite everyone - students, employees and lecturers - to join our university staff and our appeal to the Rector Prof. Dr. Obergfell to sign. Come by and show solidarity! We now need a declaration of life from our principal!"

The Rectorate is open and wants to check tomorrow morning whether it will respond to the demand for a public appeal to Robert Habeck. Because, according to Chancellor Prof. Dr. Birgit Dräger, you are aware that the University of Leipzig has so far taken too little action in the face of the climate emergency.

The student occupiers are also demanding that teaching be adapted to the climate emergency in which we all find ourselves. There should be a regular, permanent and accredited lecture series on the topic of “Action in the Climate Crisis”.
